There was an ad on the radio the other day for a pharmaceutical sleep-aid for a unhappy fellow named ‘Tom.’
Tom had a challenging day at work and, anxious for what tomorrow held, he was experiencing trouble sleeping. In order to get rest, Tom needed to rely on this pill.
My first thought was, Why aren’t we asking Tom why he had a stressful day and perhaps implement ways to manage or slow down that stress?
These are tools rarely taught and questions neglected to be asked. It won’t be long before Tom has another rough day. This is unfortunately the norm for our society. Stress has an incredible response within bodies–certain functions shut down to create energy for more vital tasks at hand. This is beautiful and necessary in short term spectrums. However, when we throw ourselves into prolonged, chronic stress, we create an imbalance. This imbalance expresses itself through insomnia, anxiety, constipation…the list goes on.
With all this going on, it’s important to remember: there is nothing wrong with the functionality of your body.
Your system is operating exactly how it should within these taxing circumstances. We simply aren’t listening to what is being expressed. We cover it up or push through. The discourse becomes louder. We take more pills. We wonder why we’re in a fog or don’t have the same vitality as we once did…
Your body is capable of far more vibrance and enthusiasm than we give credit. As a garden needs quality soil, sun, and rain, we also need stability, joy, and (I won’t get figurative on this one…) water–so much water–for optimal operation. We need to be nourished. Don’t worry, you don’t need to change your whole life in a day! Small steps are a-o-kay here! What counts here is intention and effort. Be mindful. And ask yourself,
How have you nourished yourself today?
